Tattered American Flag Live-Edge Plaque
$225.00
Tattered American flag live edge plaque carved into rustic hardwood and filled with colored epoxy. A tattered American flag is carved into a slab of rustic live-edge hardwood, its stripes and field poured in colored epoxy, with the stars left in natural wood. Around the flag, we engrave the recipient’s name and rank, a message, service dates, and emblems, then seal the whole slab under a deep, glossy coat of clear resin.
- Flag carved into a live-edge slab and filled with red and blue epoxy
- Natural wood stars and windswept, tattered stripes

- Sealed under a glossy clear epoxy flood coat
Tattered American Flag Live Edge Plaque
A flag that has flown through hard weather carries meaning, and this design captures that. The stripes trail off into ragged ends as if caught in the wind, and the field of blue holds rows of wooden stars. Because each slab has its own knots, cracks, and live edge, no two plaques look the same.
We use this design most often for retirements and farewells. The open wood around the flag is where the personal details go: the name and rank, a line of recognition, the dates of service, the branch seal, and rank or unit insignia. Plain versions without engraving make a striking piece of patriotic wall art.
Features
- Live-edge slab: rustic hardwood with natural edges, knots, and character.
- Carved tattered flag: stripes and field cut on our CNC machine, with windswept, ragged ends.
- Colored epoxy: red stripes and a blue field poured into the carving. Choose classic red or a bright orange-red.
- Wooden stars: the stars are left in natural wood, so the grain shows through the blue.
- Engraved details: name, rank, message, dates, and emblems.
- Glossy flood coat: a clear epoxy coat over the entire face for depth and protection.
Make It Yours
- Name and rank: the recipient’s name as it should appear.
- Message: for example, “In recognition of your leadership, honorable service, and dedication.”
- Dates: years of service or time with the unit.
- Emblems: branch seal, rank insignia, and unit crest (up to three).
- Stripe color: classic red or bright orange-red.
- Plain version: no engraving, for patriotic wall art.
Materials and Construction
We start with a live-edge hardwood slab, flatten it, clean up the live edge, and stabilize any cracks so the resin cannot escape through them.
The flag is carved on our CNC machine: the field is cut as a pocket around raised wooden stars, and the stripes are cut as ragged, windswept channels. The blue and red are poured as separate layers of tinted epoxy and left to cure. Then the face is leveled and sanded back so the wood, stars, and resin sit flush.
The engraving is added on our laser. Finally, the whole face is sealed under a clear epoxy flood coat that runs over the edges, giving the slab a deep, glossy finish.

The Story Behind This Piece
We have made this design for several retirements, including a major leaving the training center and a master sergeant closing out a twenty-five-year career. The rough, weathered slab and the torn edges of the flag fit the occasion: a career of service is not always polished, but it is honorable, and it lasts.
Care and Keeping
Epoxy resin is hard and glossy, but it is not glass. Clean the resin and the wood with a soft cloth and a little mild soap and water, then dry. Skip abrasive pads, ammonia cleaners, and solvents, which can haze or scratch the surface.
Keep the piece out of long hours of direct sunlight. Over time, UV light can yellow clear resin and fade colored pours, so a spot away from a sunny window keeps the colors bright.
Build Time, Shipping, and Delivery
Every piece is made to order. If you would like a digital proof of the layout and lettering before we build, ask for one in your order notes. Shipping time is in addition to the build time.
Layered epoxy work cannot be rushed. Each pour needs time to cure before the next one goes on, and the piece needs to cure fully before it is sanded, polished, and packed.
If you have a firm date, such as a retirement, birthday, or holiday, tell us when you order. We will tell you honestly whether we can meet it. We do not guarantee rush work.
We pack every piece carefully for the trip. The shipping cost is shown at checkout. For orders of $75 or more within 25 miles of Charleston, West Virginia, free local delivery is available. We are a private shop, so we do not offer pickup or workshop visits.
Good to Know
- No two are alike: wood grain, color, knots, and figure vary from board to board, so your piece will not match these photos exactly. That variation is the mark of a handmade piece, not a defect.
- Epoxy has character too: hand-poured resin can show tiny bubbles, slight color shifts between layers, and gentle variation in the surface.
- These photos show a piece we made earlier: yours is built new, to your details.
- Logos and insignia: for unit crests, team or school logos, and other protected marks, tell us what you need and send proof of permission when you have it. We will tell you plainly whether we can take it on.
- Personalized pieces are final sale: because they are built to your details, custom and personalized items cannot be returned. If anything arrives damaged, contact us with photos of the piece and packaging and we will make it right.
- Sales tax: West Virginia sales tax applies to orders delivered in West Virginia.
