Personalized Cedar Reading Holder

Every reader knows the setup: a book, a warm drink, glasses, and a pen or highlighter, scattered across a nightstand or the arm of a chair. This holder brings them together. Lay your book open over the angled rest and it keeps your place without breaking the spine. The base has a round pocket that keeps a mug from sliding, a cradle that stops glasses from rolling away, and a slot for a pen.
It is made from cedar, which is light, warm-toned, and naturally fragrant. Every board has its own mix of honey, red, and cream tones, so each holder is a little different. The rest is engraved with initials or a name, and small icons can mark each pocket.

Materials and Construction
We mill rough cedar flat on a thickness planer, cut the parts to length on the miter saw, and sand each one by hand from 120 to 400 grit. The pockets for the mug, glasses, and pen are carved on our CNC machine, so each one is sized and placed exactly. Lettering and icons are engraved on our laser at low power with two passes, so the lines have depth without scorching the soft cedar. The holder is assembled with wood glue and pin nails and finished with a furniture oil that brings out the color and grain.
Wood
– Wood: Aromatic cedar
– Holds: A paperback or hardcover, a standard mug, glasses, and a pen
– Personalization: Laser-engraved initials or name, optional icons
– Finish: Furniture oil
The Story Behind This Piece
We built the first one as a Christmas gift for a friend who reads every morning with coffee in hand. It was meant to be a one-off. Then everyone who saw it asked for one.
Care and Keeping
This piece has an oil and wax finish that lets the grain show and the wood feel like wood. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth, and wipe up spills soon after they happen. Keep it out of standing water, away from harsh cleaners, and out of long hours of direct sun, which can fade the color over time.
When the surface starts to look dry or dull, rub a small amount of furniture oil or wax into the wood with a clean cloth, let it sit a few minutes, and buff off the extra. Once or twice a year is plenty for most pieces. Wipe the mug pocket dry after a spill, and let a hot mug cool a minute before setting it down if you want to avoid rings.
Build Time, Shipping, and Delivery
Every piece is made to order. Tell us in your order notes if you would like to see a proof of the layout and lettering before we start, and we will send one for you to approve before we cut. Plan on a few days for us to build and finish your piece, and shipping time is in addition to the build time.
If you have a firm date, such as a retirement, birthday, or holiday, tell us when you order. We will tell you honestly whether we can meet it. We do not guarantee rush work.
We pack every piece carefully for the trip. Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your address. For orders of $75 or more within 25 miles of Charleston, West Virginia, free local delivery may be available. We are a private shop, so we do not offer pickup or workshop visits.
Good to Know
No two are alike. Wood grain, color, knots, and figure vary from board to board, so your piece will not match these photos exactly. That variation is the mark of a handmade piece, not a defect. These photos show a piece we made earlier; yours is built new, to your details. Personalized pieces are final sale, because they are built to your details. If anything arrives damaged, contact us with photos of the piece and packaging and we will make it right. West Virginia sales tax applies to orders delivered in West Virginia.
